Their embrace was impassioned. It was later, one more drink later. Neither was drunk. His body felt good against hers, smooth muscles and sharp planes, and she imagined her breasts felt good to him. His cologne or aftershave was intoxicating, something peppery and full of citrus notes tickling her nostrils. She clutched him to her and nuzzled his ruddy neck, feeling his lips on her own neck simultaneously. He held her closely, his arms like a steel band around her.
A tightening steel band.
He was very strong.
Had she made a mistake? Should she have insisted they continue to hang out in public?
But no, that was ridiculous. She knew it even as she considered finding an excuse and leaving him speechless, that she couldnât. Her body wanted his, her lust burned brightly down below.
She lusted for him, she wanted to taste him. She hungered for contact, and more.
She was nuzzling his neck and now she opened her mouth wide, her red lips marking his skin, and her teeth tingled the way they always did at this moment.
Just as she sank her teeth into his neck, she felt the tips of his fangs starting to break the skin of her neck.
They both bit down, hard, and then pulled away, sputtering.
âNo!â he said loudly. âI donât believe it. Youâreââ
âA vampireâ¦â she finished for him. âYes, Iâm afraid so. And so are you.â
âDamn it, I sure wish it was easier to sense each other, like in the movies.â
âI know, me too,â said Erika. She was still holding him. After all, his body did feel good. And sheâd been without a mate so longâ¦
He had moved away a little, holding her at bay in his arms, gazing into her face with a blend of disappointment and sadness.
âI hadâ¦â He paused. âI had really placed my trust on feeding tonight.â
âWell, thereâs still sex, Stewart. We can still be close.â
âSure, but itâs not the same.â He appeared more despondent than she might have predicted. To be honest, she was disappointed too, if not as dramatically.
âI know,â she said. âLetâs try anyway.â She went back to nuzzling his neck. âMmmmm, you do taste good.â
He lowered his face to her neck and kissed her there, without breaking skin.
Erika sensed this was unusual for him. He must have been one of those who cherished the old ways, the chase and the conquest, the taste of human blood flowing down their throats as quickly as they could swallow. Sheâd been one like that herself, until Justin, and then sheâd stopped killing, taking only what she needed from her willing partner. Justin hadnât wanted to be turned, however, so heâd died after contracting one of those cancers humans were getting so often these days.
She felt a pang of⦠something. Not sure what.
Yes, sheâd given it up, all of it, but holding Stewart close like this, feeling his body respond to hers, she thought it might be time to revisit the old ways after all.
âStewart,â she whispered into his neck. âWhat if weâ¦â She whispered the rest into his ear.
